THORChain Halts Zcash Swaps After Bug Triggers Erroneous RUNE Deductions

Key Facts

THORChain halted Zcash (ZEC) swaps following a software bug that triggered unintended RUNE deductions from node operators. Crypto Briefing reported that the incident occurred around October 19, 2026, resulting in approximately 140 RUNE being deducted from 18 node accounts due to an error in matching outbound transactions.

The protocol stated that no user or vault funds were lost, as the financial impact was absorbed by the bonded collateral provided by operators to secure the network. This vulnerability emerged shortly after the launch of ZEC liquidity in early October 2026, necessitating a freeze on native trading until a software fix is deployed.

The network upgrade v3.21 is expected to ship around October 23, 2026, at block height 28,366,100. This upgrade is anticipated to resolve the matching bug and allow for the resumption of native ZEC swaps.
