Pakistan Faces $1 Billion Winter LNG Bill Amid Qatari Supply Disruptions
Key Facts
Pakistan's LNG import bill is expected to exceed $1 billion this winter as the country grapples with soaring spot market prices. OilPrice.com reported that the Pakistani government plans to procure 10 additional cargoes from the spot market for delivery between November 2026 and February 2027 to cover supply gaps caused by disruptions in Qatari term contracts.
The Pakistani government intends to import these cargoes at double the price of Qatari term supplies, according to the Tribune, as Asian spot LNG prices have surged to three-year highs. This reliance on expensive spot purchases follows disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz that reduced Pakistan-bound LNG by up to 0.4 million tons per month between March and November 2026, forcing the country to turn to the spot market to maintain power generation.
