Citigroup posts $5.2 billion profit, expects full-year return above 11%

Key Facts
Citigroup reported net income of $5.2 billion in the third quarter of 2026, with profit improving even after excluding the impact of an exceptional item from the year-earlier comparison. Diluted earnings per share were $2.85, according to the bank's earnings statement, while group revenue reached $23.8 billion for the period. The year-on-year comparison benefited from the absence of a Banamex goodwill impairment charge included in the comparative period's results. Excluding the impact of this exceptional item from the comparison, net income rose 17% year on year, according to the bank's earnings presentation. The improvement came during a period of year-on-year revenue growth in services, fixed income markets and investment banking, alongside record wealth management inflows.
Services revenue reached $6.6 billion in the third quarter, up 15% year on year, according to Citigroup's earnings statement. The bank attributed the performance to Treasury and Trade Solutions and Securities Services, which supported the division's revenue growth compared with the same period a year earlier. Across the group, net interest income rose 14% year on year, supported by markets, services, wealth management and U.S. consumer cards. Wealth management recorded net new investment asset inflows of $38 billion during the quarter, according to the bank's earnings presentation. Citi described the inflows as a record, while wealth management also contributed to the increase in group net interest income during the period.
In markets, the bank's financial supplement showed fixed income markets revenue of $4,386 million in the third quarter. Revenue rose 4% from the same quarter a year earlier but fell 7% from the previous quarter, according to the supplement. The bank heads into the final quarter expecting a seasonal decline in markets revenue roughly in line with, or slightly greater than, the decline recorded a year earlier. Citi said on its earnings call that the expected decline would be "roughly the same magnitude as last year, which was 20%." The comparison refers to the decline in markets revenue in the fourth quarter of 2025, which the bank used as a benchmark for its seasonal outlook for the coming period.
Investment banking revenue reached $1,350 million in the third quarter, up 9% year on year, according to Citigroup's financial supplement. Revenue from the business fell 13% quarter on quarter, contrasting with the growth recorded against the same period a year earlier. Within the business, advisory revenue totaled $406 million, up 4% from the previous quarter and down by the same percentage year on year. Equity underwriting revenue reached $343 million during the quarter, up 77% year on year, according to figures in the supplement. Despite that annual increase, equity underwriting revenue fell 19% from the previous quarter, alongside the quarterly decline in total investment banking revenue.
On capital and distributions, Citigroup's common equity tier 1 capital ratio stood at 12.8% at the end of the third quarter, according to its earnings presentation. The ratio was 13.3% in the same period a year earlier, marking a decline in the year-on-year comparison reported by the bank. Citi meanwhile raised its quarterly cash dividend on common stock by 12% to $0.67 per share, according to the same presentation. The increase in the cash distribution per share came during the period in which the bank reported its quarterly profit, with the capital ratio lower than a year earlier. As a measure of profitability, return on tangible common equity reached 11.5% in the third quarter, according to the bank's reported performance indicators.
In its full-year guidance, Citigroup expects return on tangible common equity above 11%, according to the earnings call transcript. That forecast covers all of 2026, while the reported quarterly return relates only to third-quarter results, according to the periods specified in the bank's disclosures. The bank also expects its full-year efficiency ratio to be below 60%, according to guidance in the period's earnings presentation. The efficiency ratio represents expenses divided by revenue, a measure for which the bank set an annual target alongside its return-on-equity outlook. During the third quarter, expenses rose 3% year on year when excluding the exceptional item from the comparative period, according to the earnings statement.
The next phase includes the deconsolidation of Banamex from Citigroup's financial statements in early 2027, according to the bank's earnings call. Citi expects to record a loss of about $9 billion tied to accumulated currency translation adjustments when it takes that step. The bank said the loss would flow through the profit and loss statement, linking its recognition to the deconsolidation of Banamex during that period. The move follows a third-quarter year-on-year earnings comparison that included the impact of a Banamex goodwill impairment charge in the previous year. For its next financial disclosure, Citi set January 14, 2027, as the date for announcing fourth-quarter 2026 results, according to its earnings release schedule.
