CME Plans Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap Futures for October 19, Pending Regulatory Review
Key Facts
CME Group said on September 22 that it plans to launch Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Uniswap (UNI) futures on October 19, 2026, subject to regulatory review. The date is not an unconditional commitment because CME's official pages place the review condition directly alongside the targeted launch. The products will come in larger and Micro formats, broadening the available ways to take exposure or hedge within a regulated derivatives market. According to EL7's internal data, BCH traded at $350.90 on September 23 after trading between $335.70 and $362.60 during the session. That places the strong price move next to CME's announcement in time, but does not establish the announcement as its sole cause.
The larger Bitcoin Cash contract will cover 250 BCH under ticker BCA, while the Micro Bitcoin Cash contract will cover 25 BCH under MCH. The larger Uniswap contract, ticker UNI, will represent 10,000 UNI, while the Micro Uniswap contract, ticker MUN, will cover 1,000 UNI. The 10:1 size relationship between each larger contract and its Micro counterpart lets participants adjust notional exposure more precisely. CME says all the contracts will be block-eligible and also lists separate symbols for Basis Trade at Index Close transactions. These specifications matter more than the listing label alone because they determine each contract's exposure and the sensitivity of profit and loss to the underlying asset.
The products are entering a market where CME cryptocurrency futures and options averaged 279,800 contracts a day in the first half of 2026, according to the company. Daily notional value was $8.3 billion, while average open interest was 264,600 contracts with $15.4 billion in notional value. Open interest measures outstanding positions, while trading volume measures contracts changing hands during a period, so the two statistics should not be treated as interchangeable. CME added that contracts tied to five assets introduced during 2026 — Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche and Sui — generated more than $1 billion in combined year-to-date notional value. The comparison provides operational context for the launch, but it does not guarantee that BCH or UNI will attract similar liquidity.
Coinpedia reported that BCH moved from about $270 to $328 in roughly 90 minutes before extending its gains toward $340 after the announcement. It said the price reached a $347-$355 range on September 23, with the 24-hour gain approaching 30%. The upper part of that range is consistent with EL7's $350.90 close, but the return depends on the starting price, measurement time and pricing source. The 30% figure is therefore presented as a secondary-source reading, not as an independently calculated daily return from EL7 data. The timing also does not exclude contributions from broader market liquidity, speculative positioning or momentum trading.
From a technical perspective, Coinpedia described $300-$310 as former resistance that became a potential support zone after the breakout. It identified $350 as the level the price would need to hold to preserve the breakout structure, not as a guarantee of further gains. The report also placed the next potential resistance at $430-$450, a conditional chart assessment rather than a confirmed target. Coinpedia said total trading volume reached about $1.36 billion, including more than $111 million in spot activity in the snapshot it cited. Because the report does not fully define the venues and period used for the volume aggregation, both figures should be treated as secondary indicators rather than comprehensive official statistics.
The contract structure explains why the announcement can matter before trading actually begins. CME says its larger and Micro cryptocurrency futures are dollar-denominated and financially settled against corresponding CME CF reference rates, so a digital wallet is not required for settlement. Its cryptocurrency market operates 24/7 apart from maintenance windows, narrowing the trading-hours gap with continuously operating crypto venues. Regulated futures can broaden price discovery by accommodating long exposure, hedges and bearish positions within a common clearing structure. Wider trading access does not necessarily create immediate spot demand, however, and may also increase the ability of BCH and UNI holders to reduce risk.
For a BCH or UNI holder, the futures could provide a way to sell forward against a spot position, potentially cushioning a decline without disposing of the tokens. A directional buyer can use the contracts for price exposure, but margin magnifies moves in both directions and makes liquidity management important. The Micro contract reduces exposure to one-tenth of the larger contract, allowing positions to be adjusted in smaller increments without changing the investment direction. For a short seller, the listing adds a regulated route for expressing a bearish view, so expanded access is not automatically bullish. The market outcome will depend on the mix of long, hedging and short positions and on liquidity after trading begins, rather than on the announcement alone.
BCH and UNI will join a broader CME suite that already includes Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana, Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche and Sui. The launch is therefore an extension of an established strategy rather than CME's entry into cryptocurrency derivatives. CME says the contracts are listed under its rules, while its official guidance states that the products reside in the IOM Division of a US-registered designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization regulated by the CFTC. The company cited demand for risk-management tools across liquid altcoin markets as the reason for the addition. Even so, the performance of earlier products introduced in 2026 is context only because demand for each asset depends on its holder base, spot liquidity and specific hedging uses.
The next official catalyst is completion of regulatory review before the targeted October 19, 2026 date, and any schedule change would alter the launch thesis. Once trading begins, contract volume, open interest and spreads against the spot market will provide the direct test of product adoption. For BCH, later closes above $350 would show only that the asset remained over the breakout level monitored by the technical analysis. A sustained return below $300-$310 would weaken the proposed support conversion, while a test of $430-$450 would require fresh momentum that the announcement alone cannot supply. Until those data arrive, the supported conclusion is that CME intends to add regulated BCH and UNI futures, while the durability of the price gain and future liquidity remain open questions.
