America's Car-Mart reported results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 ended July 31, 2026, with retail sales volume down 81.9% to 2,450 units and revenue falling 57.3% to $145.8 million. The company attributed the contraction to capital constraints that limited vehicle purchases and loan originations, while inventory declined 68.7% to $35.2 million.

The decline also followed the consolidation of 60 locations during fiscal 2026, reducing the dealership count from 154 to 94. With fewer vehicles available, the average retail sales price excluding ancillary products rose 7.0% from $17,319 to $18,530, while third-party wholesale sales increased from $10.8 million to $21.0 million as the company sold most repossessed vehicles to accelerate cash conversion.

Credit pressure intensified as net charge-offs rose to 9.5% of average finance receivables from 6.6% a year earlier, while accounts more than 30 days past due increased to 4.6% from 4.1%. The allowance for credit losses was $277.0 million, or 24.74% of finance receivables net of deferred revenue and pending accident-protection claims, versus 23.35% a year earlier.

Selling, general and administrative expense was $51.6 million, compared with $51.4 million a year earlier, an actual increase of 0.3%. Its ratio to sales nevertheless jumped to 57.3% from 18.6% as sales contracted; the quarter included $13.7 million of nonrecurring costs, comprising $9.6 million of professional fees and $4.1 million of retention awards, leaving adjusted expense at about $37.9 million.

Interest expense increased 12.8% to $19.2 million. Total debt, meanwhile, fell 19.5%, or $151.3 million, to $623.9 million, while total cash including restricted cash declined to $110.0 million from $121.4 million. Unrestricted cash was $27.5 million, up from $9.7 million a year earlier but below $47.0 million on April 30, 2026.

The capital structure remains the decisive issue: covenant relief under the credit agreement was extended through September 11, 2026 to provide more time to assess financing and strategic alternatives. The company expected to file its Form 10-Q on September 9, 2026 and directed readers particularly to its liquidity and going-concern disclosures, while warning that the review might not produce a transaction or financing on acceptable terms.
