Sberbank to Accept Crypto as Loan Collateral Under New Russian Regulations
Key Facts
In a move reflecting Russia's efforts to integrate digital assets into the formal financial system, Sberbank, the country's largest lender, is preparing to accept cryptocurrencies as loan collateral. According to reports, the bank intends to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT as credit security, coinciding with the implementation of new crypto regulations in Russia effective September 1. This initiative aims to broaden the use of digital assets within the regulated banking framework.
This development follows the Central Bank of Russia's identification of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT for public trading, providing Sberbank with a clearer regulatory basis for utilizing these three assets in secured lending. Building on previous trials, the bank seeks to expand its digital asset-backed lending model to serve a wider range of corporate clients, following a successful pilot in December 2025 involving a loan secured by mined cryptocurrency. Per market data, this shift occurs as major financial institutions explore blockchain technology to enhance credit liquidity.
Looking ahead, SberCIB analysts expect cryptocurrency trading on Russian exchanges to reach between 3.5 trillion and 4 trillion rubles in the first year, potentially rising to 7.5 trillion rubles by 2029. However, the contribution of these assets will be capped at 25% to limit exposure to volatility on balance sheets. Traders are currently monitoring the stability of major digital currencies, though updated price levels for BTC, ETH, and USDT are unavailable at this time (close August 30, 2026).
