The Sandbox Bridge Exploit: 14.9B Unbacked SAND Tokens Minted on Base Network

Key Facts

1The SAND smart contract on the Base network suffered a security breach allowing an unauthorized party to mint unlimited tokens.

Amid escalating security challenges in cross-chain crypto protocols, the SAND smart contract on the Base network suffered a major security breach. According to reports, this vulnerability allowed an unauthorized party to mint 14.9 billion unbacked SAND tokens using the LayerZero framework. The attacker exploited a flaw in The Sandbox's bridge, enabling the generation of tokens that far exceed the legitimate total supply, thereby undermining the integrity of the protocol's circulating supply.

In response to the incident, development teams deactivated bridging functionality to and from the Base and BNB Smart Chains to isolate compromised liquidity and freeze illicit token movement. Per market data, SAND reserves locked on the Ethereum and Polygon networks remained uncompromised and fully secured. Reports indicate that a portion of the minted tokens was converted into approximately $675,000 worth of ETH, while the platform announced plans for a pre-incident snapshot to facilitate compensation for affected participants.

Traders should monitor liquidity levels with caution, as specific price data for the SAND token is currently unavailable in the database (as of August 23, 2026 close). Looking at the economic calendar, there are no direct crypto-sector catalysts scheduled for the coming days; however, market participants should watch for announcements from major exchanges like Upbit and Bithumb regarding trading restoration, alongside any official token burn proposals from The Sandbox.
