The Greek maritime risk management firm MARISKS has issued an updated warning regarding the evolving tactics of scammers in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the firm, unknown actors are now extorting shipping companies for cryptocurrency in exchange for bypassing the current naval blockade. These cybercriminals are cloning official Iranian toll systems to deceive operators, sending messages that include explicit offers for 'safe transit' through restricted waters. Fraudsters continue to demand payments in Tether (USDT) and Bitcoin, alongside sensitive documentation such as vessel ownership and cargo manifests. These schemes specifically target firms with vessels stranded due to regional tensions, exploiting rumors of potential official transit tariffs. MARISKS reported a significant escalation in the threat landscape, noting that at least one targeted vessel was recently subjected to kinetic gunfire. Fleet managers are urged to verify all transit-related demands through official diplomatic channels.
