Bharti Airtel’s data center subsidiary, Nxtra, has secured $1 billion in funding from Alpha Wave, Carlyle, and Anchorage to scale its capacity from 300MW to 1GW. Gopal Vittal, Airtel’s executive vice chairman, highlighted that Nxtra is specifically developing its networks to cater to enterprises, hyperscalers, and government clients. This expansion aligns with projections that India’s data center capacity will grow fivefold by 2030, positioning the country as a leading global hub. The sector is benefiting from massive tailwinds, with over $61 billion invested globally in 2025 alone, driven by AI-related demand. Navroz D. Udwadia of Alpha Wave Global emphasized that high engagement from Indian users with platforms like ChatGPT and Claude is a key catalyst for infrastructure growth. The deal values Nxtra at $3.1 billion post-money, underscoring strong institutional confidence in Airtel’s long-term digital services strategy.
