Disney Sends Cease-and-Desist to ByteDance Over AI Copyright Infringement

The Walt Disney Company has issued a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, accusing the Chinese tech firm of copyright infringement for using its films to train the AI video generation model Seedance 2.0 without compensation. Attorney David Singer stated that ByteDance's infringement of Disney's intellectual property, including Star Wars and Marvel, is "willful, pervasive, and totally unacceptable." Potentially affected companies include Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Global, Sony Group Corporation, Netflix, and Lionsgate. This legal action highlights the broader threat posed by AI video-generation models to the traditional Hollywood studio business model. Rapid advancements in AI video technology threaten to undermine the studios' core business by enabling the creation of high-quality video content from simple prompts. This could erode their control over intellectual property and production, representing a significant structural challenge to the industry.
