It is based on a survey of supply management executives and covers both manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors. Survey respondents report whether various business indicators (like new orders and employment) have improved, deteriorated, or stayed the same. A diffusion index is then calculated, where a level above 50 indicates expansion in the region's economy.
