4 questions

Thanksgiving Day is a scheduled New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. It is not an economic statistic, so it has no value, level, or change figure. All NYSE markets close for the day, which means no equity trading, no new prices, and no settlement activity. It does not measure shopping, sales, sentiment, or market performance, and a closed market produces no prices or volume.

The multi-year calendar is announced in advance by NYSE Group and lists Thanksgiving Thursday as a full closure and Friday as an early close. There is no data collection, no sample, and no revision, since the dates are fixed in advance with no actual or revised values.

Core trading normally runs 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. On Thursday, the Exchange is not open for business, so all NYSE markets record 0 trading hours. On Friday, the core session ends at 1:00 p.m. ET and options at 1:15 p.m. The named late sessions end at 5:00 p.m. ET on NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE National, and NYSE Texas.

No weekend-date shift applies because Thanksgiving always falls on a Thursday. Extraordinary closures are announced separately. A companion Trading Days table estimates trading days per month.

Nothing moves it because it is a fixed calendar holiday, not a market-driven figure.

  • Thanksgiving Day, Thursday: full closure of all NYSE markets with no trading, prices, or volume.
  • Friday after Thanksgiving: shortened return session with core trading to 1:00 p.m. ET, options to 1:15 p.m., and late sessions to 5:00 p.m.

Thanksgiving 2023 showed the key split. Thursday, November 23, 2023 was a full closure with no trading. Friday, November 24, 2023 was only a short session, with core trading from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET.

Anyone expecting a normal Friday received only 3.5 hours instead of 6.5. AlKhaleej confirmed the closure in Arabic press the same day.

  1. Closure rule: If the date is Thanksgiving Day, Exchange status is closed with 0 trading hours under NYSE Rule 7.2.
  2. Early-close rule: If the date is the Friday after Thanksgiving, core trading ends at 1:00 p.m. ET and options at 1:15 p.m. The named late sessions end at 5:00 p.m.
  3. Calendar example: Suppose Thanksgiving Thursday is November 26. Thursday, November 26 then has 0 trading hours. Friday, November 27 runs 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET, which is 3.5 hours instead of 6.5.

There is no formula, no weights, and no seasonal adjustment in this calendar.

Key point

Friday after Thanksgiving is an early-close trading day, not a holiday. Do not confuse the 1:00 p.m. equity close with the 2:00 p.m. bond-market early close in the separate SIFMA schedule.
