Orthodox Easter Monday

Orthodox Easter Monday, also called Bright Monday, is the Monday after Orthodox Easter Sunday (Pascha). It is Day 2 of Bright Week, the festive week continuing Easter celebrations, and a moveable spring observance each April to May. In the United States, Greek, Russian, Serbian and other Orthodox groups mark it with church services, family gatherings and feasting. It is not a federal holiday, so offices stay open and markets trade normally, unlike Good Friday, a stock market holiday.

The date rule is simple: Orthodox Easter Monday is always the Monday after Orthodox Easter Sunday, a moveable spring date in April to May. There is no release to watch, so nothing is published with it, no revisions exist, and holiday law changes only by Congress. Church tables set the Pascha date years in advance.

The public-life rule is a normal Monday. Federal offices and Federal Reserve banks stay open, and markets trade from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. The weekend rule that shifts holidays never applies to it, and markets read no signal from the day.

It has no market drivers because it is a one-day religious observance, not economic data.

  • Bright Week: Day 2 of the festive week continuing Orthodox Easter celebrations.

A parish bulletin scheduled Pascha Sunday on 5 May 2024 and Bright Monday liturgy at 9:30 a.m. on 6 May 2024. OPM, the federal personnel agency, listed only Memorial Day on 27 May 2024 that month, so federal offices stayed open. Under standing market rules, the New York Stock Exchange treated 6 May 2024 as a regular trading day. Orthodox and Western Easter shared 20 April 2025, yet 21 April 2025 stayed a normal US workday.

  1. Pascha date: Use the Nicene church rule on the Julian calendar. Pick the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, dated 21 March in that reckoning.
  2. Orthodox Easter Monday: Add 1 calendar day to Pascha Sunday to get Monday.
  3. Illustrative example: Take Pascha Sunday as 5 May 2024, then Monday is 6 May 2024. Tables list Monday 21 April 2025, one day after Pascha on 20 April 2025.
  4. No adjustments: No weighting, seasonal adjustment, or sampling applies because it is not a statistic.

Key point

Many think Easter Monday, Western or Orthodox, closes US offices, banks and markets, but it does not. The confusion comes from Good Friday, a stock market holiday, and from Easter Monday as a statutory holiday in some European countries.
