Continuing Jobless Claims measures the number of individuals who are already receiving unemployment benefits and continue to file for them. While initial claims track new unemployment, continuing claims provide insight into the duration of unemployment and how difficult it is for workers to find new jobs. A persistent increase in this number suggests a stagnant labor market where workers are struggling to transition back into employment. It is a lagging indicator but offers a clear picture of the underlying strength of the US economy.
Compiled by the U.S. Department of Labor based on weekly reports from state employment agencies. It counts individuals who have completed at least one week of unemployment and are currently receiving regular state benefits.
