About This Indicator

What is BoE MPC Vote Cut?

BoE MPC Vote Cut records how many Monetary Policy Committee members vote to reduce Bank Rate (the Bank's policy rate). The committee (MPC, the United Kingdom rate-setting body) holds 9 equal votes. Each member holds 1 equal vote as an independent for a fixed term, while a Treasury observer briefs on fiscal policy with no vote. It is not a poll of economists, market pricing, or the rate level itself, only the policymakers' split for a cut.

When is it released and what happens each release?

The committee votes 8 times each year, about once every 6 weeks, after several preparatory meetings spread across multiple days. Each decision is published at 12 noon on the preannounced date, with minutes released at the same time. Each release brings a summary and minutes, while 4 of the 8 add a quarterly Monetary Policy Report plus bond stock (holdings for policy) data. Votes are final with no revisions, and readers compare actual and expected splits because a closer vote signals deeper division.

What moves BoE MPC Vote Cut?

Cut votes build when inflation falls toward 2%, pay and services inflation ease, growth stays subdued, slack (spare labour capacity) builds, and budget measures help.

  • Governor (Chair): puts the proposition to the vote and holds 1 equal vote.
  • Deputy Governors (3 votes): cover monetary policy, financial stability, and markets and banking, with 1 vote each.
  • Chief Economist: brings the staff outlook and holds 1 vote.
  • External members (4 votes): add outside expertise by appointment and hold 1 vote each.
  • Treasury observer: briefs on fiscal policy and holds no vote.

A published 5-4 decision of July 31, 2024 cut Bank Rate by 0.25 points to 5%, while 4 members preferred holding at 5.25%. Inflation stood at the 2% target yet was expected to rise to around 2.75%, with pay growth at 5.6% and services inflation at 5.7%. The lesson is that a cut can pass by 1 vote even with inflation set to rebound, and minutes name each dissenter and their case.

How is BoE MPC Vote Cut calculated?

  1. Proposition: The chair tables a motion to cut Bank Rate by a set step, such as 0.25 points to a stated level.
  2. Ballot: Each of the 9 members votes for or against the motion, or registers a different choice such as hold or a 0.5 point cut.
  3. Majority count: Votes for and against are tallied, and 5 or more of 9 carries the motion, reported as 5-4, 6-3, and so on.
  4. Runoff vote: If no motion wins 5 votes in a 3-way split, the chair holds a binary vote between the top 2 options. The option with 5 or more votes becomes the decision.
  5. Equal weight: There is no weighting or seasonal adjustment, only a straight count of 9 equal votes under majority rule. For example, 5 votes for a 0.25 point cut to 4.00% against 4 holds publishes as 5-4 and sets Bank Rate to 4.00%.

Key point: A 5-4 cut vote does not promise more cuts, since only the majority motion sets Bank Rate and policy stays data dependent. A dissenter's preferred larger cut does not apply unless it wins 5 votes.
