The S&P Global Flash UK Manufacturing PMI is a preliminary monthly gauge of UK factory conditions. PMI means Purchasing Managers Index, a survey of buying managers about change versus the previous month. It draws on a panel of around 650 manufacturers, grouped by sector and workforce size by share of output. It uses the same method applied in more than 40 countries, covering manufacturing and services panels.
Each index records direction only, not output volume, GDP, or the level of activity. Each index runs from 0 to 100, where 50 means no change from the previous month. Above 50 signals broad improvement and below 50 signals broad decline.
Responses are collected in the second half of each month from panels of around 650 manufacturers and around 650 service providers. The flash uses early replies only, about 80% to 90% of responses, typically about 85%. Responses arriving after the cut-off enter the final estimate with the full sample. It is released monthly in the final 10 days of the reference month at about 09:30 London time, about one week before final data.
It appears with the composite gauge, services activity and manufacturing output, plus commentary and charts. Final manufacturing follows on the opening day of the next month, with services and composite days after. S&P Global never revises survey replies, though seasonal factors can change, and the fuller final supersedes the flash.
The headline blends 5 survey gauges that each pull it up or down. Together they reflect demand, production, staffing, supply strain and material stocks.
Supply shocks can lengthen delivery times sharply. Because that index is inverted, long delays can lift the headline while production falls. Read output and components with the headline when delivery times swing. The Bank of England uses UK PMIs to assess business conditions. The composite gauge averages manufacturing output and services activity by official value added and is not comparable with the manufacturing headline.
Illustrative example: suppose 100 makers answer output: 30 higher, 50 steady and 20 lower, so output equals 30 plus half of 50, or 55.0. With components at 54.0, 55.0, 49.0, 52.0 and 48.0, the PMI is 52.4, or expansion.
Key point: the flash is never revised, the final is a fuller rerun, and output is only 25% of the headline.
