The S&P Global UK Manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers' Index, a monthly direction score) tracks change in British factory activity, not output volume itself. S&P Global compiles and publishes it through S&P Global Market Intelligence, its Market Intelligence division. CIPS, the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply, formerly shared the brand. It surveys around 650 purchasing managers at manufacturers chosen by sector and workforce size in line with GDP shares.
It belongs to PMI surveys now available for over 40 countries, and it covers factories only, not services. Questions span output, new orders, export orders, expected output, jobs, backlogs, finished-goods stocks, purchase volumes, delivery times, input stocks, and input and output prices. The index is not an official output volume, a cash value, or a growth rate, only the reported direction of change from the prior month. The all-economy picture sits in a separate Composite PMI, so this gauge never speaks for services.
Replies are collected in the second half of the reference month. The final report lands on the first working day after that month, under embargo until 09:30 UK time. Publication shifts to the next working day when the first day falls on a weekend or holiday. A flash estimate arrives about a week before the end of the month.
Each release covers output, orders, jobs, capacity, supply chains, and input and output prices, plus splits by sector, firm size, and peer countries. Key findings open the report, then follow output and demand, employment and capacity, supply chains, and inflation. Replies are never revised after publication, though seasonal factors can be updated from time to time. Markets read only the level against 50 and its direction, where above 50 means improvement and below 50 means decline.
The index blends 5 activity gauges, with orders and output carrying most weight.
Parts can point in different directions, as output, orders, and jobs improve while firms keep trimming input stocks to protect cash. The headline can therefore expand while some detail stays soft, since it measures breadth, not size.
Key point: a reading above 50 never states a growth rate or a volume; it states how broadly expansion spread across firms.
