Christmas Eve

United Kingdom

4 questions

Christmas Eve is the Christmas Holiday half day published by the London Stock Exchange for equities trading in England and Wales. The Exchange is part of London Stock Exchange Group. The entry covers On Exchange Trading Services, including the SETS order book.

It is not a NON-trading day, unlike Christmas Day and Boxing Day on 26 December. Each date row also shows off-book reporting and settlement status.

The calendar is a standing rolling table on the Business days page, not a timed data release. Each holiday has 1 row with date and weekday, holiday label, on-exchange impact, settlement flag and off-book status, alongside the full bank-holiday table. On the Christmas half-day row, the closing process starts at 12:30 London time, settlement runs as standard and off-book reporting stays available as normal.

When 24 December falls on a weekend, the preceding Friday takes the half-day label. There is no fixed publication day or time and no fixed revision schedule, but the Exchange keeps its days of operation under review. The Business Parameters workbook, the MIT201 system guide and the settlement calendar are linked alongside.

Four calendar entries shape the half day, with no weights, sampling or thresholds.

  • On Exchange Trading Services: runs the early close. Order-book trading ends at 12:30 London time, then auction and post close follow.
  • OTC/SI off-book trade reporting: covers trades agreed away from the order book. It stays available as normal, with no early close.
  • Settlement: shows GBX/GBP settlement in EUI. Christmas Eve is a standard settlement day.
  • Intraday session phases: the SETS sequence from pre-trading to post close. On early-close days the phases after 12:30 run to a compressed timetable.

On Friday 24 December 2021, a weekday Christmas Eve, the exchange ran the half-day rule with standard settlement and normal off-book reporting. UK shares closed nearly flat in light pre-Christmas trading, with the blue-chip FTSE 100 flat at 7,372.10. The FTSE 250 was also flat, yet weekly gains stayed strong on hopes the economy could weather Omicron. A miners and banks surge kept the month near its strongest run in almost a year, though thin trade left the day flat, not closed.

  1. Observance date: Christmas Eve falls on 24 December on a weekday, or the preceding Friday when 24 December falls on a weekend.
  2. On-exchange status: the market is a half day, with the closing process commencing from 12:30 London time.
  3. Session timetable: On the SETS order book, trading runs 08:00 to 12:30, then auction to 12:35, crossing to about 12:40 and post close to 13:15. That gives 270 minutes, about 53% of the standard 510 minutes from 08:00 to 16:30.
  4. Settlement flag: GBX/GBP settle as normal in EUI on a standard settlement day.
  5. Off-book reporting: OTC/SI off-book reporting stays available as normal.

Key point

Christmas Eve is not a full closure, bank holiday or NON-trading day. The table shows a half day from 12:30 with standard settlement, against full NON-trading and NON-settlement rows for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
