The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for the Eurozone tracks 6-month growth expectations for the euro area. ZEW Mannheim, the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research, runs it monthly without interruption through its Financial Market Survey. About 350 analysts from banks, insurers and large industrials take part, mostly based in Germany.
They answer for Germany, the euro area, the USA and China. Topics cover activity, inflation, short- and long-term rates, stock indices and exchange rates, plus profits across 13 German industry branches. It measures expected direction, not actual output or gross domestic product.
It surveys no households, consumers or non-financial firms. It is not an EU official statistic and differs from the Commission Economic Sentiment Indicator. Germany and the euro area form separate series, so the German reading is not the euro-area reading.
Analysts answer over roughly 14 days in the first half of each survey month, with about 90% responding within a 14-day deadline. ZEW releases results monthly around the middle of the month at 11:05 Frankfurt Time under an annual calendar published each autumn.
Each release pairs the headline euro-area expectations balance with German results and present-condition ratings for both. It also covers the USA and China plus inflation, interest-rate, stock, exchange-rate and sector-profit views. A detailed results table, the questionnaire and a monthly report come with each release. Each month balance stands as published, with no revisions afterward.
Markets treat positive readings as brightening optimism and negative readings as deteriorating sentiment. They watch it as a leading indicator for the economic trend.
The headline moves with analyst views across 6 areas published together in each release.
One survey showed the split clearly: euro-area expectations rose 4.5 points to 17.0. The present-condition gauge fell 11.2 points to -55.0 in the same survey. Germany showed the same split, with expectations up 8.3 points to 15.7 on hopes for rate cuts.
Its present-condition gauge stayed at -93.1. That survey drew 160 analysts. The case shows the index tracks future sentiment, not current output, and can point opposite the present-condition gauge.
Key point: This is a ZEW Mannheim survey, not a Eurostat release. It differs from the Commission gauge, a separate EU business survey. It separates Germany and the euro area, so the German reading is not the euro-area reading. It measures expected direction over 6 months, the balance of optimists over pessimists, not actual output.
