The SVME Manufacturing PMI (now often referred to as the procure.ch PMI) is a key indicator of the economic health of the Swiss manufacturing sector. It is based on monthly survey data from purchasing managers at approximately 300 industrial firms. The index tracks variables such as production levels, new orders, backlogs, and employment. Because Switzerland is a major global exporter, this PMI is also seen as a barometer for international trade demand and global economic trends.
The index is compiled from survey responses where managers compare current business conditions to the previous month. A diffusion index is calculated by adding the percentage of 'higher' responses to half the percentage of 'same' responses, with 50.0 as the neutral threshold.
