Christmas Eve

4 questions

Christmas Eve is the ASX Trading Calendar label for the last business day before Christmas Day. The publisher is Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), and the calendar covers ASX Trade, the cash market trading system, plus settlement and business day status. It is an exchange operating calendar, not an economic survey, index or forecast, with no panel, weighting or seasonal adjustment. It does not declare national or state holidays, and it does not cover Christmas Day, a full CLOSED day, or Brazilian B3 markets.

The yearly Trading Calendar sets Christmas Eve as the last business day before Christmas Day, not a fixed 24 December date. When 25 and 26 December fall on a weekend, the Christmas Day and Boxing Day observances move forward. The Eve row stays before them.

Normal trading ends early at 14:10 Sydney time, or 2:10pm AEDT, Australian Eastern Daylight Time, on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The Market Announcements Office closes at 4:30pm AEDT, while Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day have no trading. ASX Limited may alter the calendar without notice and accepts no responsibility for inaccuracies in the published matter.

It has no market drivers because it is an operating calendar, not an index.

  • Trading day: whether ASX Trade is open for trading, shown as CLOSE EARLY on Eve.
  • Settlement activity - ASX Settlement (CHESS): whether cash equities settle, shown as Settlement on Eve.
  • Settlement activity - ASX Clear (Derivatives): whether derivatives clear and settle, shown as Settlement on Eve.
  • Business day: whether the day counts under ASX operating rules, shown as YES on Eve.

Listed@ASX Compliance Update no. 12/24, dated 19 December 2024, states the holiday rule in 3 sentences. Normal trading ceased at 2:10pm AEDT on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, with the Market Announcements Office closing at 4:30pm AEDT. The market did not trade at all on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Tuesday 24 December 2024 was therefore a shortened trading day ending at 2:10pm, not a full closure, while the next day had no trading.

  1. No calculation: the calendar assigns categories only, with no formula, weighting or seasonal adjustment.
  2. Categorical statuses: a Trading Day means ASX Trade is open for trading, while Eve shows CLOSE EARLY, Settlement, Settlement and YES.

For context, a normal trading day runs until 16:00, but on Eve normal trading ceases at 14:10 Sydney time, about 1 hour 50 minutes earlier.

Key point

Christmas Eve is not a full closure like Christmas Day. Eve trades to 2:10pm with settlement, while Christmas Day has no trading or settlement.
