The Westpac-Melbourne Institute Leading Index is designed to indicate the likely pace of economic activity in Australia relative to its trend three to nine months into the future. It combines several economic indicators, such as stock market prices, dwelling approvals, and consumer expectations, into a single monthly figure. A positive reading suggests growth is likely to accelerate above the long-term trend.
The index is calculated using a weighted average of eight separate economic components including share prices, yield spreads, and employment data. The month-over-month (MoM) figure represents the percentage change from the previous month.
