Bastille Day, known in France as 'Fête Nationale', is the French national day celebrated on July 14th. It commemorates the Storming of the Bastille in 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people in 1790. The day is famous for the oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe, held on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. It is a symbol of the end of absolute monarchy and the birth of the sovereign nation.
As the national day of France, it is a statutory public holiday. All government offices, banks, and most businesses are closed, and public transport schedules are often modified.
