Esala Full Moon Poya Day is a significant religious and public holiday in Sri Lanka, observed by Buddhists to commemorate the first sermon delivered by the Buddha, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. It also marks the arrival of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Anuradhapura and the commencement of the annual Esala Perahera festival in Kandy. As a statutory public holiday, all government offices, schools, and financial institutions, including the Colombo Stock Exchange, remain closed for the duration of the day.
This is a non-statistical event based on the lunar calendar. The date is determined annually by the traditional Sinhala Buddhist calendar, falling on the full moon day of the month of Esala (typically in July).
